Romance Your Finances - Write a Love Letter to Money
Oct 28, 2024
Money. Just reading that word might stir up a complex mix of emotions – anxiety, desire, shame, or even fear. For many of us, our relationship with money feels more like a turbulent romance than a peaceful partnership. We chase it, worry about losing it, feel guilty for wanting it, or believe we'll never have enough. But what if we could transform this often fraught relationship into something more nurturing and balanced?
Like any meaningful relationship, the way we think about, talk to, and interact with money shapes its role in our lives. When we approach our finances from a place of scarcity and fear, we create exactly that reality. But when we cultivate a mindset of abundance and respect – treating money as a trusted ally rather than an elusive enemy – we open ourselves to a whole new world of possibilities.
Well, I've found a fun and effective way to nurture my relationship with money, a trick taught to me by Jen Sincero in her book "You Are a Badass at Making Money". She recommends writing a letter to money to discover how we feel about it, well I took it a step further and wrote a love letter to money. When we express our love for something, treat it with respect, and give it our time and attention the relationship can't help but grow in wonderful ways.
As Sincero puts it, "One of the best ways to find out how you truly feel about money is to write it a letter as if it were a person."
Taking her advice to heart, I sat down and penned this letter to my dear friend, Money:
To my beautiful and benevolent friend, Money
Hey You,
I’m writing today to tell you just how special you are in my life and in the lives of my family.
We have so much fun spending time with you, dreaming about all the fun activities we will do together and all the creative and incredible ways we can make the most of our abundant time together.
We have so much fun spending time with you, dreaming about all the fun activities we will do together and all the creative and incredible ways we can make the most of our abundant time together.
We love taking you out on the town, going to all the best restaurants and the coolest shows. The kids love it when you take them to Defy, to the LEGO store and to Target, they have the best time spending quality time with you, and always look forward to seeing you again.
Although I thoroughly appreciate all the time we spend together I think you bring the most joy to our lives when you support us quietly in the background. Knowing that you are there when we need you brings a sense of peace and calm to all of our lives. That safety net you provide allows us to live optimistically and dream big without a scarcity mindset and it allows us to sleep easily and deeply at night, rising every morning with excitement for the day.
Sometimes we forget that we need to support you too. It's our job to help you grow and to give you opportunities to make the biggest impact possible. We need to fill your cup above and beyond the energy that we take from you. With this in mind, I promise to work hard and help you grow everyday, I promise to do my part to help you reach your greatest potential.
I also know that others deserve to love you just as much as we do and part of filling your cup is letting you go, giving your energies to those that need them more. Allowing you to help others just as you have helped us. So, I also promise to generously share you when the time feels right, share you easily and with gratitude to those who need to feel your love too. I now know that there is more than enough of your love to fill all hearts and I will do my part in helping you reach that lofty and important goal.
Money, we love you dearly. Thank you for all that you give and all that you do. Thank you for being in our lives!
With deep gratitude and love,
Carson
Now it's your turn, find a quiet 20 minutes, grab your journal and your favorite pen and pour your heart out to money. Begin the relationship anew and find a way forward working in partnership and with gratitude. And please share your letter here in the comments, so we can all learn from your unique perspective.
